The Challenge

Bristol Airport required a large-scale parking solution that could accommodate vehicle traffic while also meeting the project's drainage requirements. Rather than creating a traditional impermeable hardstanding, the specification called for a permeable surface capable of supporting vehicle loads and helping manage surface water naturally.

With a substantial 21,000m² area to be developed, the project also demanded a solution that could be installed efficiently without compromising quality or performance. The chosen system needed to withstand the demands of a busy operational environment while delivering long-term durability and reliable performance once in service. Achieving this balance between structural capability, drainage performance and installation efficiency was critical to the success of the project.

Maximising installation rates while maintaining consistent quality across such a large area was also essential to keeping the project progressing and ensuring the completed car park could be delivered to the required standard.

The Solution

To meet these requirements, Ecodeck 40 was selected and supplied by Geoworks. The system provided the permeability required by the project specification while delivering the strength needed to accommodate vehicular traffic.

According to the contractor, Ecodeck was chosen because it met the technical requirements of the scheme and offered a practical solution for the intended application. Its permeable design was particularly important, helping the project deliver improved drainage performance compared to conventional impermeable alternatives.

The contractor explained: "It provides a permeable surface, so we've got better drainage." They also confirmed that the system met the loading requirements needed for the vehicles using the car park, ensuring compliance with the project's specification.

Installation on site

Despite the significant area involved, the installation process proved straightforward. The contractor described the product as being similar to assembling a jigsaw puzzle, allowing installation teams to quickly become familiar with the system.

Laying the completed sections was described as simple and efficient. Installation teams built larger sections before placing them, helping maximise productivity across the site.

The contractor highlighted the speed of installation as one of the key benefits of the system, reporting that crews were able to install approximately 1,200m² in a single day.

This level of productivity helped maintain progress across a project covering a substantial 21,000m² area.

Performance and results

Once installed and brought into service, Ecodeck 40 has continued to perform as expected. The contractor reported that there have been no complaints regarding the Bristol Airport installation and that the surface has held up well under operational conditions.

The successful installation has provided Bristol Airport with a permeable parking surface that delivers the required drainage performance while supporting the demands of vehicle traffic.
