About the site

The allotment is used by Rachael's Rascals Childminding and Nicole's Childminding Club as an outdoor learning space for young children. It supports nature-based learning, growing food, wildlife exploration, Forest School activities and community engagement. The space benefits not only the children in our care but also local families, volunteers and the wider community. We hope to hold community open days in the future so even more people can enjoy and learn from the space.

Before work began, the allotment had been unused for around eight years and was heavily overgrown with brambles and weeds. Although we had transformed much of the plot through hard work and volunteer support, access remained challenging, particularly in wet weather.

The entrance area and parking space became very muddy, making access difficult for vehicles delivering materials and for volunteers helping with the project. During periods of bad weather, vehicles risked getting stuck and the area could become slippery and difficult to use safely.

This affected the day-to-day use of the allotment, as tools, resources and materials are regularly transported to the site to support children's activities and the ongoing development of the space.

The solution

The gravel grid has already made a significant difference to the entrance area. Combined with the sub-base and gravel surface, it has created a stable and accessible hardstanding area that can be used confidently in all weather conditions. Access has been improved for vehicles, volunteers and visitors, while the entrance now provides a more welcoming approach to the allotment.

As the surface continues to settle and establish, it will help protect the ground from becoming churned up, reduce maintenance requirements and improve accessibility. This will support the continued use of the allotment by children, families, volunteers and the wider community throughout the year.
