PROJECT OVERVIEW

Working alongside specialist geotechnical consultancy Geoman, we delivered a cost-effective, piling platform solution for contractor Tercon at Pinnacle Business Park in Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset. The project formed part of the development of new business units at Scot Elm Drive, West Wick, where three new buildings required safe and reliable piling platforms to support foundation works across a total area of 7,560 m².

THE CHALLENGE

The original piling platform specification was based on an alternative geogrid system that proved too costly for the contractor. Tercon approached us looking initially for a like-for-like replacement, but piling platforms require a fully engineered solution rather than a direct product swap. In addition, key design information was missing at the outset, creating a risk to programme and approval if not resolved quickly.

The solution

The final piling platform design comprised MultiTrack 1000™ geotextile installed as the separation layer, two layers of TerraGrid Pro 4040 geogrid for reinforcement, and 600 mm of granular fill to deliver a suitably heavy-duty platform. Three piling platforms were constructed, providing safe access and working conditions for piling rigs across the full development footprint. Clear communication, accurate data and successful testing allowed the designs to be indemnified, giving the contractor complete peace of mind.

We achieved exactly what we set out to do - save money while maintaining quality and preventing a delay to the project.

The result

The project achieved a fully engineer-approved piling platform design, a significant cost saving compared to the original, alternative geogrid specification, no delay to the construction programme, and a safe, robust and reliable solution for critical foundation works. Our collaborative approach, attention to detail and responsive service ensured a smooth delivery from initial enquiry through to design sign-off.

What the contractor said

"After being referred to us by one of our merchant partners, we achieved exactly what we set out to do - save money while maintaining quality and preventing a delay to the project. It was clear we were working with a reliable partner, because the Geoworks team made the process as easy as possible. Should we require specialist geotechnical products and expertise in the future, we know exactly where to go."
