If you’re considering using geosynthetics in your projects but lack the expertise to choose the right one, Geoworks is here to help. Our team of experts can guide you in selecting the ideal geosynthetic for your specific project needs. We’ve prepared this brief guide to provide some initial advice, but we encourage you to reach out to our team for a more in-depth discussion if needed.

What is a geogrid?

Geogrids are a product category within our geosynthetic range, and is the industry term for a plastic grid used for reinforcement in construction projects. For instance, they are used to prevent soil erosion on slopes, reinforce retaining walls, and reinforce road bases. A geogrid's unique design allows it to distribute forces, such as a vehicle driving across a road, over a larger area, making it ideal for supporting various project infrastructures like haul roads, permanent roads, compounds and piling platforms.

What is a geotextile?

Geotextile is also a product category within our geosynthetic range and a standard industry term. Our geotextiles are made of synthetic, woven and nonwoven plastic fabrics. They are suited for separation or filtration applications. For example, when you are placing new stone on a site, you don’t want this sinking in. Adding a geotextile creates a separation barrier and reduces material loss. They can be used in a variety of construction projects to improve ground conditions. You can use a geotextile for a range of applications such as road building, car parks, railways, and housing projects.

Geogrids vs geotexiles

As you can now see, it isn’t a case of using a geogrid instead of a geotextile or vice versa. These two geosynthetics can both have a place in your infrastructure project.

You are more likely to use a geogrid only on a project involving a large amount of stone or aggregate such as temporary roads or on a wind farm. But you might also need a geotextile on these projects to ensure separation. However, a geotextile will likely be required, regardless of the size of your project.
