Neoloy Tough-Cell Comparison Tables

Introduction

Neoloy Tough-Cell provides 3D mechanical stabilisation for soft subgrades, road bases and heavy-duty infrastructure. Unlike 2D reinforcement or chemical treatments, Neoloy Tough-Cell confines the infill in three dimensions, helping improve bearing capacity, reduce deformation and support long-term performance.

Use the comparison tables below to understand how Neoloy Tough-Cell performs against geogrids, HDPE soft cells and chemical stabilisers.

Neoloy Tough-Cell vs geogrids

Parameter Tough-Cell Geogrids
Reinforcement type 3D cellular confinement with wider stress distribution and load transfer. 2D planar reinforcement with limited vertical confinement.
Infill requirements Can utilise lower quality, locally available or recycled fill materials. Typically requires high-quality, well-graded aggregate for interlock.
Bearing capacity Creates a beam effect that improves bearing capacity and reduces settlement. No beam effect.
Modulus improvement Improvement factors up to 5.0x depending on subgrade conditions. Typically around 2x improvement at low settlement.
Thickness reduction Can reduce pavement thickness by up to 70% or more. Typically less than 45% reduction.
Lifespan and maintenance Can significantly extend pavement life and reduce maintenance requirements. Performance depends on geogrid type and installation conditions.
Sustainability Supports use of recycled and local fill materials, reducing carbon impact. Usually dependent on imported engineered aggregate.
Installation Effective immediately on soft ground with fewer reinforcement layers required. May require multiple reinforcement layers to achieve equivalent performance.
Soft soil performance Highly effective on weak, expansive and variable subgrades. More limited performance on highly deformable soils.

Neoloy Tough-Cell vs HDPE soft cells

Parameter Tough-Cell HDPE soft cells
Material performance Manufactured from a high-performance polymeric alloy with high stiffness and durability. Manufactured from HDPE with lower stiffness and long-term performance.
Creep resistance High creep resistance helps maintain confinement and structural stability over time. Higher creep can reduce confinement and long-term effectiveness.
Tensile strength Higher tensile strength suitable for heavy-duty infrastructure applications. Lower tensile strength under sustained loading.
Dynamic stiffness 2 to 5x higher stiffness under repeated and long-term loading. Lower stiffness under cyclic loading conditions.
Environmental durability Improved resistance to UV exposure, oxidation and environmental degradation. Lower resistance to UV and oxidation over time.
Temperature performance Suitable across a wide operating temperature range from -60°C to +60°C. Reduced performance in extreme temperatures.
Design life Designed for long-term infrastructure and heavy loading applications. More suited to lighter-duty or shorter-term applications.
Applications Suitable for roads, rail, ports, airports, platforms and retaining structures. Typically used in less demanding stabilisation applications.
Lifecycle value Can reduce pavement thickness, maintenance and aggregate demand. Lower upfront cost but potentially higher long-term maintenance requirements.

Neoloy Tough-Cell vs chemical stabilisers

Parameter Tough-Cell Chemical stabilisers
Installation Quick and straightforward installation using standard construction equipment. Requires specialist machinery and trained operators.
Long-term performance Provides long-term confinement and reduced deformation throughout the design life. Stiffness can reduce significantly over time.
Reliability Mechanical stabilisation delivers predictable and consistent performance. Performance can vary depending on soil conditions and mixing quality.
Cracking resistance Flexible confinement system helps reduce cracking and surface deformation. Rigid treated layers can become brittle and crack under repeated loading.
Quality assurance Installation can be visually inspected during construction. Inconsistent mixing may be difficult to detect onsite.
Environmental performance Unaffected by moisture, freeze-thaw cycles and aggressive environmental conditions. Can be sensitive to moisture, weather and freeze-thaw conditions.
Drainage Provides a self-draining stabilised structure. May require additional drainage measures.
Maintenance Localised damage can be repaired without affecting the wider system. Local failure can affect larger treated areas.
Sustainability Reduces aggregate demand and supports lower carbon construction methods. Can generate chemical dust and increase environmental impact.
Lifecycle cost Lower long-term maintenance and reduced material usage can improve whole-life value. Higher installation costs and shorter effective lifespan can increase lifecycle costs.
