Understanding BS 5837

What is BS 5837

BS 5837 is the British Standard that provides recommendations for trees in relation to design, demolition and construction. It helps ensure that trees are properly considered and protected throughout development, balancing environmental value with practical project delivery.

Why are BS 5837 tree surveys required?

Planning authorities often request a BS 5837 tree survey when a proposed development may affect existing trees. These surveys:

  • Assess the quality, condition and value of trees on or near a site.
  • Identify which trees can be retained, removed or require specific protection.
  • Provide data to support planning applications and guide sustainable site design.

What information does the survey include?

A BS 5837 tree survey records details such as:

  • Species, height, stem diameter and canopy spread.
  • Age class and physiological condition.
  • Estimated remaining contribution (in years).
  • A root protection area (RPA), which defines the ground around each tree that must be safeguarded during works.

Trees are then categorised (A, B, C or U) to indicate their quality and suitability for retention.

What follows the survey?

The survey often forms part of a wider package, which may include:

  • Arboricultural Impact Assessment (AIA): evaluates the effects of development on retained trees.
  • Arboricultural Method Statement (AMS): sets out how construction will avoid damage to trees.
  • Tree Protection Plan (TPP): a drawing showing protective fencing, ground protection and working methods around RPAs.

Why does this matter?

Retaining and protecting trees supports planning approval, contributes to biodiversity and enhances site value. From a practical perspective, it helps avoid costly enforcement action and ensures developments align with national and local policies.

How does this link with Geoworks solutions?

Tree protection is often closely connected to ground engineering and surface design. Our geosynthetic solutions, ProtectaWeb can support compliance with BS5837 by:

  • Providing load-bearing surfaces over root protection areas without excavation.
  • Allowing water and air movement to reach tree roots.
  • Reducing soil compaction and protecting long-term tree health.

These products integrate with wider Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS), helping projects meet planning requirements for both tree protection and surface water management.
