The Root Cause: Download the survey results

The presence of trees and greenery shapes how people feel about where they live. Beyond their environmental role, trees add character, provide shade, improve air quality and create healthier, more attractive places to call home. But did you know that around only 70% of newly planted trees survive to maturity?

To understand just how much this matters to buyers, we carried out a national survey of more than 2,000 people in the UK actively looking to purchase a home. The results offer a clear picture of what future homeowners expect from new developments.

Housing Growth with Green Priorities

The UK Government aims to deliver 1.5 million homes in the next five years. Meeting this demand must not come at the expense of green space. Our research shows:

  • Trees and greenery are a decisive factor for many buyers.
  • People are willing to pay a premium for homes with green surroundings.
  • The majority believe developers could do more to protect greenery. Buyers expect councils to enforce tree protection regulations.
  • Developers who prioritise tree protection not only meet planning requirements but also increase the desirability and profitability of their sites.
